According to the results of a recent study, most people who switched to a vegetarian and organic diet after reading a book about eating healthy reverted to their old eating habits after about a year.

As part of the study, over 500 university students were told to read a 2006 book entitled ‘The Omnivore’s Dilemma’ that focuses on the impact of dietary choices.

The students were then surveyed on their grocery shopping and dietary habits in two groups, one that had just read the book and one that had read it a year prior to taking the survey.

Students who had read the book a year before the survey reportedly had not kept up with the changes suggested by the book.

Authors of the study offer a couple of possible explanations for the shifts in behavior saying: “Individuals may forget the content of the book, and the feelings inspired by the book may decline in intensity. Second, attitudes toward food and eating are likely to be linked to ingrained habits and long-held beliefs.”

Researchers also suggested that an older subject group might offer different results.
