One police officer is dead and another wounded after a huge shootout with two men linked to the Boston marathon bombings at Boston's MIT campus.
An MIT campus police officer responded to reports of a disturbance outside the Stata building and reports of shots being fired. A shootout with two males, equipped with assault rifles and explosives, ensued. The campus police office was mortally wounded and was pronounced dead in hospital.
The two males hijacked a black mercedes SUV and sped from the scene, across Watertown and were cornered in an intersection by a mixed force of city and state police. A blazing shoot-out followed with eyewitness reporting as many at 70 rounds fired back and forth. One of the suspects launched an explosive device toward police. The device was described as large and unwieldy, similar in appearance to the pressure cooker bombs used at the Boston Marathon earlier in the week.
After propelling the explosive device, which exploded in a deadman's zone between the suspects and the mixed police force, one of the suspects attempted escape by foot. This suspect was apprehended by police, who ordered he remove his clothes, for fear he was harbouring other explosive devices.
The second suspect drove the stolen black mercedes SUV through the police barricade and remains a fugitive.
