German SPD considers coalition with Merkel

The Social Democratic Party of Germany held their federal party convention in Leipzig. Amid ongoing tough coalition talks with the Christian Democrats of Angela Merkel, Chairman Sigmar Gabriel stood for re-election. With 83.6 percent of the vote he received his worst result so far. In a self-critical speech he reflected on the party’s poor parliamentary election result in September and promised to be persistent in the talks with the CDU.
