They say the heart wants what it wants and in one man’s case that was a tree.
Peruvian actor and environmental activist Richard Torres recently pledged eternal devotion to his bark-covered paramour in a ceremony that took place in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
As part of the ritual, Torres left offerings at the tree’s roots, including nuts, bananas, oranges and pottery.
There was an exchange of rings, during which a proxy for the tree slipped a band on Torres’ finger.
After the officiant proclaimed the union official, the activist kissed the tree and then gave it a lick.
He then tossed the bouquet into the crowd of onlookers. While it’s traditionally believed that the person who catches it will be the next married, it’s unclear if in this case that means to a human or a to tree.
For the wedding, Torres wore a white suit and a blue hat. The tree was adorned with a white necktie.
The event was arranged and executed to raise awareness for environmental concerns.
Torres said his future plans are to expand his campaign beyond Argentina, beginning with other Latin American countries.
