PRESENTED BY JULIAN VON PLATO
The Hollow Body is the moniker for multi-instrumentalist musician and songwriter Jonathan Velthuysen, under which he has released his latest album entitled 'Johannine'.
Jonathan was born in East London, South Africa in 1986, shortly before moving to the small university town of Stellenbosch in the Western Cape of South Africa. This is where he grew up, went to school and discovered his interest in music and art.
After the death of his father in 2006, Jonathan moved to the Outer Hebrides of Scotland to spend some time with his mother. There he studied courses in the traditional Gaelic music indigenous to the Hebrides. This was followed by a year of travelling with performing groups and attending festivals all over Britain and parts of the EU. By the time of his return to South Africa, Jonathan had begun writing, recording and performing his own material.
In 2010 Jonathan started his first project 'Stepdog' as an answer to the restlessness he still needed to "get out". Stepdog achieved a small amount of success and acclaim in South Africa with their first EP Amy After Dark, but broke up a year later due to differences of direction within the band.
After the breakup of Stepdog, Jonathan went to Stellenbosch Guitar Company to begin an apprenticeship as a luthier(guitar builder). Jonathan regularly records and performs, as The Hollow Body, with Stellenbosch Guitar Company guitars that he has built.
The Hollow Body is essentially a solo project consisting mainly of acoustic guitar and vocals.
"Emotionally raw, there is an endearing honesty in his lyrics that would be impossible to feign"- Angela Weickl , LMG 2013.https://www.facebook.com/TheHollowBody
