MYSORE: This septuagenarian mother was preparing to fly to the US on November 14 to be with her daughter who is expecting her third child. But that was not to be. with her, who was expecting her third child, on November 14 but fate decreed the other way.

Suchetha Devi, 70, a widow staying alone at her TK Layout residence in Mysore was found murdered on Monday night. Her hands and legs were tied and mouth gagged, police said.

Cops suspect she may have died due to suffocation. Officers said it is murder for gain and two or more persons were involved. Though valuables are missing from the house, police are yet to ascertain the exact loss as there is no family member in town to provide them with the details.

Suchetha, who was a lecturer with Karnataka State Open University for some time, had packed her clothes and food items like pickles to be taken to the US. She visited her relatives in Bangalore on Saturday and returned to Mysore the same day.

Victim never took risks

A tenant who lived on the ground floor said that she last saw Suchetha on November 4 at 9.50am. The victim owned a three-storey house and stayed alone on the first floor. The ground and second floor were rented out.

Neighbours told cops that Suchetha was reserved and extra cautious too. She never opened the door to strangers. She never went down even to buy vegetables or collect milk. There are no signs of forcible entry into the house either, said police. So we suspect it could be someone known to the victim, said police officers.

The murder may have occurred between 10am and 6pm on Monday. It came to light in the night when tenants did not see Suchetha since morning.

Suchetha, a member of St Bartholomew's Church, was laid to rest at the church's cemetery on the Bangalore-Mysore Road on Tuesday, confirmed Church's presbyter in-charge Rev Devakumar. Her relatives from Bangalore and Mysore arranged for the funeral. Suchetha attended church on Sundays and participated in all church activities.
