Three people were injured on Wednesday evening in Mobile, Alabama, after two barges loaded with natural gas exploded and caught fire.
According to reports, the first blast happened at around 8:30 pm on a barge near the George C. Wallace traffic tunnel, which carries traffic from Interstate 10 under the Mobile River. A one-nautical-mile safety zone has been established around one of the barges.
According to Fox10 TV, the explosion occurred while crews were conducting a cleaning operation. The injured people are in critical condition at the USA Medical Center. Fire department spokesman Steve Huffman did not describe the severity of their injuries, CNN reported.
There were at least three explosions tied to the incident, Mobile Fire-Rescue noted around 9:30 pm on Twitter. Multiple explosions occurred throughout the night.
According to Fox10 TV, after closing the shipping channel, officials with Mobile Fire-Rescue said they would let the fire burn out on its own to prevent further injuries.
According to reports, the initial explosion was sparked by a static charge.
