Three people were shot to death and one was injured in the South of France on Thursday evening by a 19-year-old man who claimed to belong to terroristic organization Al-Qaeda, Le Figaro reported.
At around 2 pm, the suspect, named Karl R., was walking in a busy street in a residential area of Istres, holding a kalashnikov automatic rifle, when he randomly started shooting at passersby, French media reported.
He first killed two neighbors, aged 35 and 45, while they were doing some DIY work outside their house. He then turned around and shot a 60-year-old man while he was driving his car, killing him.
As he kept walking and shooting at passing vehicles, a 55-year-old woman was left slightly injured due to a bullet that grazed her ear, The Local reported.
The gunman then walked towards a nearby roundabout, raised the rifle and pointed it at another car. According to a witness, there was no one on the roundabout ahead and the driver managed to escape safely, The Local reported.
Police arrested the suspect not far from the shooting scene, after he threw the kalashnikov in a nearby ditch.
According to French media reports, the suspect had a history of psychiatric problems.
