Authorities in California have confirmed one person was killed and at least six others injured after a gunman opened fire with an assault rifle in terminal three of Los Angeles airport.
It is believed the dead person was a member of the Transportation Security Administration team at the airport.
A suspect has been taken into custody and is understood to be the only person involved in the shooting.
“We have multiple victims that have been shot and have been transported and we have had some other injuries as well in addition to the suspect himself,” Patrick Gannon, LA Airport Police Chief told reporters.
The attack which happened just after nine o’clock local time sparked chaotic scenes. Planes remained on the ground, people were evacuated many of whom rushed onto the tarmac. Others remained locked down in airport buildings. Streets surrounding the area were also shut.
President Barack Obama told reporters at the White House he was concerned about the incident.
