Its official – the state of Gujarat in India will be home to the world’s tallest statue. The initial work has already started on the soon-to-be highest work of art which is to honor a historic personality by the name of Sardar Patel.

It will stand nearly 600 feet tall. That astounding height is twice that of the iconic Statue of Liberty with her pedestal. The upcoming monument will be called the Statue of Unity.

Patel is considered a hero in India. Prior to his passing in 1950, he was one of the country’s National Congress leaders, who worked extremely hard during India’s fight for independence from Britain. His fitting nickname was the “Iron Man of India”.

Although the memorial serves as a heartwarming tribute to the political figure, the cost of the statue isn’t cheap. Right now, local authorities are anticipating the final cost to be nearly $340 million, which is stirring up some controversy, as over 30 percent of India’s population is reported to be living in poverty.

Despite the debate, the construction plans are moving forward. The foundation stone was laid on October 31st, which is Patel’s birthday.
