Two Thai soldiers were killed and three more seriously injured by a roadside bomb in southern Thailand on Sunday.

The device exploded in the Rueso district of the nation's predominantly Muslim province of Narathiwat while five infantry troops were patrolling the area in a military vehicle.

Local police attributed the ambush to separatist militants.

Following the blast, the militants began trading gunfire with the troops, according to officials.
The ambush caused the deaths of the driver, Master Sergeant Piyapong Impram, and Private Kritikorn Muenlin.
