Mercury Prize Winner James Blake: "I'm numb with excitement"

Songwriter and singer James Blake collected the 2013 Barclaycard Mercury Music Prize on Wednesday for his album 'Overgrown'.

Mercury winners can be hard to predict but on the night no-one seemed more shocked than the winner himself.

SOUNDBITE, James Blake, singer, saying (English):

"Slightly numb with excitement, my face might not show it but I'm very very very happy."

(Reporter: You look a bit shell-shocked. Were you surprised?)

"Yes. I was yeah. I felt like I was sitting on a table amongst a load of people that just weren't going to be nominated and I was wrong."

The 25-year-old Londoner is known for his melancholy tunes but also incorporates hip hop and electropop.

But it's the first significant contribution to his trophy cabinet in quite some time.
