Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim has donated $74 million to the Broad Institute to help expand genome research. Most of the genomic research is currently done on those from European descent. Slim says he hopes funds will help develop new treatments for health concerns like cancer, diabetes, and kidney disease. The institute found that Latin Americans have a gene variant the predisposes them to type 2 diabetes, but it’s not found in Europeans.
