A study from the University of Texas that looked at the effects of how often people used the pronoun "I" in conversation and emails found some interesting data.

The results of the study show that people who say 'I' a lot tend to be less powerful or confident, and might be subconsciously subordinate to the people they are addressing.

Doctor James Pennebaker, one of the authors of the study said: "There is a misconception that people who are confident, have power, have high-status tend to use 'I' more than people who are low status. But the high-status person is looking out at the world and the low-status person is looking at himself."

Researchers conducted five seperate experiments as part of the study that all grouped subjects together in different situations and compared the perceived status of each person with how often they used the word "I."

In each of the separate experiments the person who used the word 'I' fewer times in conversation or email was also the one who was perceived to have more status and power.

What do you think? Do you ever notice how much you or other people use the word "I"?
