STORY: Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters in a South African township on Friday who have been calling for the municipality to be placed into administration due to poor delivery of services.
Violence broke out as police were escorting local officials who were inspecting the damage done to the township by riots over the past week.
Police then fired stun grenades and rubber bullets to disperse the crowds.
Tensions have been running high for over a month at Bekkersdal township, 50km south-west of Johannesburg, with sporadic clashes erupting between police and residents demanding the municipal council to be dissolved, including the removal of the ward councilors, as well as the mayor of the town of Westonaria.
Residents have been angered by a lack of electricity, running water and sewage disposal in their township which they attribute to corruption.
