Cold keeps basking shark away in Cornish sea

5 years ago146 views

Colder seas could be the reason keeping basking sharks away from the waters around Cornwall. Cornish seas are a hotspot for basking sharks but the Marine Conservation Society said it has received hardly any reports of sightings of the sharks so far this year. Basking shark is the second largest fish in the world and it feeds on plankton.
It was reported that the water temperatures are cooler than average for the time of year which makes the plankton failed to bloom to the usual quantities. Therefore, basking sharks are staying in warmer seas to feed.
More than 170 sightings of the sharks were reported last year around the Cornwall coastline.
