Eating, drinking, breathing, and sleeping are all necessary aspects of being alive.

A new study shows why getting enough sleep is such an important part of living a healthy lifestyle.

Researchers from the University of Rochester Medical Center studied the glymphatic system in mice, which cleanses toxins and other byproducts from the brain’s natural processes, while the study subjects were asleep.

They observed the activity of the glymphatic system in the mice with a two photon microscopy imaging process while they slept.

Rashid Deane, a neurologist from the University of Rochester Medical Center and co-author of the study said: “What we found was about a tenfold increase in activity. That tells us that sleep appears to be significant in helping the brain eliminate unwanted byproducts.”

Neurological disorders like Alzheimer’s disease are associated with not getting enough sleep, and accumulated amyloid beta proteins that are cleared away by the glymphatic system.

Another finding from the study shows that there is more extracellular space during sleep, which lets cerebrospinal fluid flow through the brain taking out waste and breaking it down in the liver.
