The Beacon is a mix of the real and surreal: a place where the sky is mostly dark and the laws of physics appear not apply. It is located in an area surrounding a lighthouse which stood next to St Catherine's Oratory on the Isle of Wight. It was named after St.Catherine of Alexandria who was martyred here in the early 4th Century by the pagan emperor, Maxentius. She was reputedly one of the Saints who appeared to Joan of Arc.
