One vehicle which is described as "the world's first solar-powered family car" is not only eco-friendly and cost-effective, but it’s also proving to be reliable.

The popularity of energy efficient cars is definitely on the rise thanks to a rapid increase in gas prices in recent years.

However one vehicle which is described as "the world's first solar-powered family car" is not only eco-friendly and cost-effective, it’s also demonstrating it can be reliable and compete with the performance aspects of standard vehicles today.

The four seater car named Stella, which was developed by Solar Team Eindhoven recently landed a major victory in the Cruiser class at the World Solar Challenge 2013. The car completed an 1,800 mile race through Australia carrying an average of three occupants throughout the journey.

The vehicle averaged a little over 40 miles per hour during the journey and it reached a top speed of nearly 75 miles per hour. World Solar Challenge director Chris Selwood stated “Stella’ is a wonderful solar car in a field of exceptional cars and teams. I look forward to 2015 and the prospect of more cruisers as we work toward the world’s most efficient electric car.”

Stella contains solar panels on both the roof and rear of the vehicle, which can be flipped upwards to face the sun. These panels recharge the car’s batteries.
