Me playing the organ at First Church of Christ Scientist in the popular seaside town of Bournemouth.

The organ was first built in 1928 by the famous John Compton Organ Company Ltd. In 1949 the organ was rebuilt by Compton who added the choir division and a new console. The organist here told me that John Compton himself married a Christian Science girl and that was how this church came to have an organ by his firm. The organ is built on typical Compton lines using the extension principal consisting of 12 ranks of pipes all fully enclosed in 3 swell boxes concealed behind a grill at the front of the church with the exception of the patent 32ft polyphonic bass. The specification reads:

For this first video I am playing the hymn 'Stand up, stand up for Jesus' to the tune 'Morning Light' which is an ideal hymn for showing off the main tonal colours of the organ for accompanying congregational hymn singing.

Many thanks to the church officials for allowing me access to this magnificent Compton organ.

The church building is currently up for sale so the future of the organ is uncertain.
