The more you text, the less you sleep say the researchers of a recently published study on the relationship between the two.

That proclamation is based on the online responses of 83 college students who were asked questions about their sleep quality and how many texts they sent and received in a day.

Some of the reasons behind what one has to do with another are common sense.

For example, sleeping next to a phone that’s sounding message alerts all night will likely interrupt a person’s rest.

Exacerbating that problem is that many feel the need to respond immediately.

Other explanations delve a bit deeper into the human psyche.

In addition to asking about texting and sleeping behaviors, the questionnaire gathered information about academic burnout, social stress, and emotional states.

From those answers, the researchers discovered that students who texted the most were more likely to feel stressed out by personal relationships.

The study’s lead author attributed that heightened vulnerability to interpersonal conflict to texting’s inherent limitations.

She feels that due to texting’s inability to convey nuance and non-verbal cues, trying to use it to resolve problems can often lead to bigger ones.
