Nut allergy: classmate slips hazelnut into girl's drink, almost kills her

Nut allergies can be dangerous. Just ask Linn Jernberg, the Swedish schoolgirl whose classmate slipped hazelnut into girl's drink, almost killing her.

Sticks and stones may break my bones but nuts would surely kill me. That is a rough translation of a haiku by a Swedish schoolgirl, Linn Jernberg, about her experience fighting for her life after a classmate maliciously snuck a hazelnut into her drink. If you're still hung up on that first sentence not being a haiku, don't be. It was a haiku in SWEDISH dude, that was just the translation. Come on.

She informed her whole class that she is deathly allergic to nuts, but some joker thought she was kidding. A hazelnut in the bottom of a glass of water was enough to cause her throat to swell up and her lips to turn blue. A trip to the emergency room saved her life, but her allergy is still so severe that even being in a room where nuts have been could send her straight back to the hospital. As a result, her classroom needs to be decontaminated, and all of her classmates have been shipped to a room down the hall where no nut has ever been.

So the next time you find out about a kid wanting to sneak his nuts into a classmate's food, put a stop to that behavior right away! There's no call for it. None at all!
