Tourists in Verona, Italy seeking a little extra luck in love have been touching the right breast of the city’s Juliet statue – as in Romeo & Juliet – for years. Over time the bronze sculpture has become disfigured.

The statue stands outside of the Casa di Giulietta. The house’s balcony is said to have served as Shakespeare’s inspiration for the tale.
Most of the damage is in the form of holes that have resulted from the years of contact with human hands, but there’s also some cracking occurring in the wrist.
Said the director of the Club di Giulietta, “For a while now we have been witnessing the gradual attrition of the statue, but now we can wait no longer."
It’s been suggested by the head of another interested agency that the funds to do so come out of the money paid to the house by tourists.
Dozens of visitors are said to come to the site daily. In addition to rubbing the statue, at one time many left love letters on courtyard walls, a practice that’s since been prohibited due to the damage it caused.
