While we expect to gain spiritual knowledge from nuns, few would go to them for physical fitness.

After years of traveling as a missionary, Sister Linda Sim is back in her home country of Singapore helping children with cancer. She’s teaching them taekwondo.

The Sister learned the martial art before she became a nun.

In her youth she aspired to be a soldier or police officer. Being too petit for either, she learned taekwondo with the hope of becoming a bodyguard.

Her path changed when she met a Franciscan missionary, became a nun, and began her work with the church.

In 2004 she returned to Singapore upon learning that her mother had Alzheimer’s.

Shortly after she arrived, she heard about a federation that was hosting taekwondo classes for children hospitalized with cancer.

Sister Sim pulled her black belt out of retirement and joined the effort.

She now runs a weekly class and over the years has witnessed some impressive recoveries among her students.

One boy, who was diagnosed with a brain tumor, dependent upon a wheelchair and given only six months to live is now in his 20s, walking, and has earned a black belt.
