Unfortunately there’s always room for potential danger in medical facilities housing those who are mentally ill.

Recently, a psychiatric hospital patient stabbed an employee in the head with a spike, causing significant injuries.

The troubling incident occurred at the Thomas B. Finan Center in Cumberland, Maryland. The patient, 50-year-old Craig Zello of Hagerstown became combative.

Staff members at the facility attempted to restrain him, however Zello managed to strike one of the workers in the back of the head with a 7-inch galvanized spike. The police were immediately called for assistance.

Zello reportedly confronted officers, however he was taken into custody without causing further harm to anyone else. When cops arrived at the scene, the male employee still had the spike sticking out from his head.

He was quickly transported to Western Maryland Regional Medical Center for serious injuries. Zello is currently being held in jail without bond and facing numerous charges including first- and second-degree attempted murder, possession of a weapon with intent to injure, first degree assault and reckless endangerment.
