Nuclear waste tanks leaking radioactive sludge at Hanford, Washington

Governor Jay Inslee announced on Friday that six single-shelled tanks at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in southeast Washington state are leaking radioactive waste. The governor said the leaks do not pose an immediate risk to health. The Hanford site, roughly five miles from the Columbus River, holds a total of 177 underground tanks full of radioactive waste, of which 149 are single-shell tanks. Each single-shell tank can hold up to 447,000 gallons of sludge.
