People who buy Powerball lottery tickets are given six months to claim their prize money if they win.

A one million dollar prize ticket for the multi-state Powerball game has now expired.

The ticket was bought for the April 10th drawing at a Circle K gas station in Jeffersonville, Indiana near the interstate highway during spring break, when many travelers are passing through the area.

The store will receive a roughly 10 thousand dollar bonus for selling the winning ticket, even though the winner never stepped forward.

According to a spokeswoman from Indiana’s Hoosier Lottery, around 10 million dollars of their prize money is reportedly left unclaimed every year.

The most total prize money ever left uncollected in Hoosier Lottery history was back in 2002 when a 50 million dollar Powerball jackpot ticket was never cashed in, and in 2004, a 5 million dollar Hoosier Lotto jackpot was also never claimed.

The leftover money will reportedly go to the state government for distribution among teacher’s retirement funds, vehicle owner taxes, and firefighter’s pension funds.

Some of the money will also go back into the next lottery prize jackpot.
