KTVU tries to yank embarrassing Asiana pilot names online videos
  • 11 years ago
Fox affiliate San Francisco news network KTVU has admitted that they are trying to take down online videos of a mistake where obviously fake prank names were reported as real ones. After Asiana Airlines Flight 214 crashed on July 16, KTVU news anchor Tori Campbell reported the names "Sum Ting Wong," "Wi Tu Lo," "Ho Lee Fuk," and "Bang Ding Ow" as the real names of the pilots who are in charge of the flight that day. The station claims the National Transportation Safety Board confirmed the names, which is why they reported it. However, the NTSB claims that a summer intern operated outside the scope of his responsibilities and erroneously confirmed the names.

Most people were simply baffled as to how no one caught on that the names were obviously a prank before they were read out o nair.

KTVU general manager Tom Raponi claims that the station is falling back on copyright infringement law to try to block videos showing the embarrassing mistake, in order to minimize the "thoughtless repetition of the video by others" since the broadcast is both insensitive and offensive to many in the Asian community. However, many netizens say the move is unwise, as in trying to censor viewership of the broadcast, KTVU is simply drawing more attention to it.

Meanwhile FTVLive is simply calling the station's move to cover up their mistake "gutless", and that if one of their reporters were filmed doing something extraordinary the video would still be allowed online. According to the site, "Of all the mistakes KTVU made on this story, trying to cover it up is one of the worst."
