Russia Prohibits Swedish Adoptions Because of Gay Marriage Laws

Russia has banned international adoptions to countries that allow same-sex marriage, leaving many children on their way to families in Sweden orphans once again.

Representatives of each country met recently to further discuss the specifics and practical mechanics of the law.

According to the Swedish Foreign Ministry, no negotiations, not even those involving adoptions among Swedish heterosexual couples, happened.

Russia is reportedly focused on having countries sign an agreement promising they won’t send Russian children to LGBT families.

In a public forum, however, Russian politician Vitaly Milonov made his feelings on the matter clear.

In a television interview he said, "The perverts? No, it is unacceptable. Homosexuals are 'perverts' and should absolutely not be allowed to adopt children. Children who grow up in that kind of environment are destroyed psychologically."

He was also eager for people to know that he believes Russian children are better off in orphanages than with same-sex parents.

That’s exactly the way the situation is playing out so far. Said one Swedish adoption agency worker, "It's terrible. We have 13 children in Russian orphanages today who have been offered to parents in Sweden who they have actually met."
