The structures consist of four walls and are roughly twice the size of current temporary dwellings. Measuring about 17.5 square metres they are able to comfortably fit five people. Built around a simple framework of poles and connectors and covered in insulated plastic, the shelter takes roughly four hours to build, but is able to last almost three years, even in adverse weather.

The siding covering the shelters is a material called Rhulite that lets in light during the day, but keeps it from casting shadows outside during the night, giving those inside more privacy. The material also reflects sunlight during the day while retaining heat in the evening.

Ikea and the UNHCR are also hoping to improve the design with netting that will serve as a solar panel to charge a battery that can provide power for lighting.
