Cats survive explosion: boat explodes, pets swim to safety
  • 11 years ago
Two cats left behind on a sinking tuna boat off the Oregon coast were able to swim safely to a rescue vessel. After the engine of their boat exploded, Mark and Cynthia Schneider were able to put on their survival suits and climb aboard another boat, but were forced to leave the cats behind.

With the boat going under water, a tabby named Jasper found temporary refuge on the bow, while the other cat, a calico named Topaz, was forced into the ocean. When the Schneiders boarded the boat of their partner nearby, they turned around to discover their cats were less than 100 yards away. Topaz navigated through debris before being pulled up from the side of the boat.

With the boat sinking deeper, Jasper finally leapt into the water and swam to safety.

The fisherman, with 27 years of experience, lost $40,000 worth of tuna in the explosion along with their boat, the 60-foot Sea Princess.
