Time and time again, terrible accidents reinforce how important it is to keep our vehicles in shape.

One man recently died in a horrific way after he fell out the driver’s seat of his van because the door to the vehicle had been attached by a bungee cord.

The victim, 31-year-old Austin Monroe Herd had been traveling westbound on the interstate near Bonneville, Oregon, when he got into a physical confrontation with his girlfriend, who was sitting in the passenger's seat.

The traumatic incident occurred at about 9 pm on a recent Saturday. At some point during the fight, the vehicle crashed into a guardrail and Herd fell out the door, hitting the pavement. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to state troopers, the latch on the driver’s side door was broken so a bungee cord had been used to hold it on. To make matters even worse, Herd had not been wearing a seatbelt at the time of the incident.

The girlfriend, who had minor injuries from the fight, along with another passenger inside the van were taken to the hospital and later released. An investigation has been launched into the fatal crash.
