NASA astronaut, Dr. Karen L. Nyberg has quite an impressive resume and her most recent assignment has been the role of flight engineer aboard the International Space Station for Expedition 36. After launching from Kazakhstan in May 2013, she and her crew are only the second group to leave Earth and arrive at the space station in the same day.

During Expedition 36 and from the space station, Dr. Nyberg took and posted to her Twitter feed this image of what looks like lightning. Surprisingly, the white streaks are fog in the Ohio and West Virginia river valleys.

The rivers form geometric patterns that repeat at different scales to create irregular shapes. The fog filling the valleys helps highlight these shapes standing out against the dark backdrop of the landscapes around the rivers.

Originally from Vining, Minnesota, Dr. Nyberg is also a wife and mother of one who enjoys drawing and painting, among other hobbies. Certainly many will view this picture of the fog as a work of art as well.
