Carrying extra weight can be just as harmful for canines as it is for people.

In fact, many of the risks are the same including high blood pressure, respiratory problems, and heart disease.

To help pups shed their extra pounds, specialized fitness programs have been sprouting up at kennels and pet spas across the US.

Some offer supervised jaunts through nature trails, runs on treadmills, and pool workouts to get the dogs moving.

For a weight loss program to be successful, the humans in the family need to do their part as well.

The first step is accepting that food doesn’t equal love.

Giving your pet a cheeseburger because you haven’t been around much all week might ease your conscience, but it’s not doing the dog any favors.

Overall, vets recommend that you stick to specifically designated foods, and if snacks are a must, try veggies like carrots and broccoli
