Twitter, a company started only 7 years ago, has become synonymous with a short and concise way of communicating.

A Vatican cardinal however says that Jesus Christ was the world’s first tweeter. The reasoning behind the linking of Christ and the social media site is reportedly because his phrases and sayings were “ brief and full of meaning”.

The claim was made at a recent press conference featuring the cardinal, Gianfranco Ravasi. It was also pointed out that communication via technology is extremely important in churches today, and pastors should be more than willing to speak to church goers, even if its from behind a computer screen rather than face to face.

Ravasi stated that Jesus “used tweets before everyone else, with elementary phrases made up of fewer than 45 characters like 'Love one another’.” The purpose of the cardinal’s speech was to prove that there’s nothing new about abbreviated messages that pack a lot of meaning.

Pope Benedict XVI fully embraced the Twitter phenomenon, opening an official account in November of last year, and Pope Francis actively encourages use of this new medium.
