The Indian government is now working to create the world’s largest solar powered plant.
Solar power is one of the rapidly growing alternative energy sources. The Indian government is now working to create the world’s largest solar powered plant.
The eco-friendly facility will be located in Rajasthan. It will reportedly encompass 23,000 acres of land and upon completion, the plant will generate 6,000 million units of electricity a year.
The first phase of the project will have a power generation of 1000 megawatts. A government statement noted “This will be the largest solar-based power project in the world. Being the first project of this scale … this project is expected to set a trend for large-scale solar power development in the world.”
Five companies joined forces to work together on the project including the Solar Energy Corporation of India, BHEL, Powergrid Corporation of India, Hindustan Salts and Rajasthan Electronics & Instruments Limited.
The first phase alone will generate 10 times more energy than any existing solar plant in India. The long term goal of the plant is to assist India in maintaining a reliable and eco-friendly energy source for the fast growing population.
