A bus crash on a mountain road near Kuala Lumpur killed 37 people today, with 16 more in hospital with injuries, many of them critical. The crash was Malaysia's most lethal road accident since independence.

Just before 3 p.m. the bus was leaving the Genting Highlands resort with 53 people onboard and was about four kilometres away when it went off the road at a corner. It dropped into a 30-metre deep ravine that has no road access.

Emergency responders brought in a crane to hoist the injured out of the ravine. Many of the survivors are in critical condition at hospital. The bus driver is among the dead.

The Genting Highlands resort is Malaysia's only legal casino. It attracts tourists from China and Sotheast Asia, as well as locals.
