A New Zealand man was electrocuted after he climbed up a transformer pole and came into contact with live, high-voltage conductors.

His girlfriend sustained burns when she tried to get him to come down.

The young man and his girlfriend had reportedly been fighting while driving when he stopped the vehicle and headed for the transformer platform.

Emergency crews initially thought they were responding to a car accident, but when they got there they learned that the man’s encounter with the pole had been voluntary.

Before they could retrieve his body they had to wait for the power to the 11 thousand volt transformer to be cut.

In the meantime they stopped and rerouted traffic as the area surrounding the scene was considered to be hazardous.

Representatives from the power company were also on hand to assist in securing the area. (2,6,1)

Top Energy’s chief executive said, "Our condolences and thoughts during this terrible time go to the family of the person who died."

He also assured the 30-or-so customers who were without power as a result of the incident that crews were working diligently to restore their electricity.
