An Air France flight headed from Caracas to Paris was carrying 1.3 tons of pure cocaine with an estimated street value of 270 million dollars.

The cargo was discovered by French police when they opened 30 colorful suitcases that were on the plane but didn’t belong to any of the flight’s passengers.

Guessing it was an inside job involving officials from the flight’s Venezuelan point of origin, three people from that country’s security forces were quickly detained.

Among them was an officer from the Bolivarian National Guard’s anti-drug force.

The investigation is continuing with a close examination of the surveillance footage taken at the Simon Bolivar International Airport.

France’s interior minister announced that several people have been taken into custody on the European side as well.

Suspects there are being identified and located with the assistance of authorities from Spain, the UK, and the Netherlands.

According to the interior minister, the situation "illustrates the importance of strengthening International cooperation in the fight against traffickers."

The drugs were found on September 11th, but officials didn’t make the discovery public until over 1 week later.
