"Breaking Bad" took home the top honor at Sunday's (September 22) Primetime Emmy Awards, winning best drama the first time, as AMC's gritty tale of a schoolteacher turned meth kingpin heads into the homestretch of its final season.

Jeff Daniels, though, who plays a jaded anchorman in HBO's "The Newsroom," scored an upset win for the best actor in a drama, beating out front-runner Bryan Cranston, of the aforementioned drama "Breaking Bad."

ABC's "Modern Family" took home the best comedy series prize for the fourth consecutive year.

More than 17 million viewers tuned in to check out the Emmys, making it the largest audience since 2005.

It was also a good week for "Prisoners," the dark thriller starring Hugh Jackman as a father on a desperate search for his missing daughter, locked up the weekend box office title in the United States and Canada, grabbing more than 21 million dollars (USD) in in ticket sales during its first three days in theaters.
