Directed by Hansal Mehta, 'Shahid' is a biographical movie based on the life of lawyer and human rights activist, Shahid Azmi, who was assassinated in 2010 in Mumbai.
Mehta decided to make the film after he heard people were accusing Shahid Azmi of criminal activities. He then approached Sunil Bohra, who then agreed to produce the film with Anurag Kashyap.
'Shahid' was shot on a small budget over nine months. Much of the film's dialogue was improvised later. It's a work of fiction based on the captivating true story of slain human rights activist & lawyer Shahid Azmi. Accused of terrorist links, he was imprisoned under a draconian law before he went on to become a fearless lawyer. The film traces the breathtaking journey of a poor citizen who became an unlikely messiah for human rights and an inspiring tribute to the human spirit.
Starring Raj Kumar Yadav in lead as Shahid Azmi, the film also stars Tigmanshu Dhulia as Maqbool Memon, K K Menon as War saab, and others in their respective roles.
Produced by Sunil Bohra, Anurag Kashyap, Guneet Monga and Shailesh Singh, the realistic drama 'Shahid' is presently expected to release in theatres on October 18, 2013.
