Go on any social media site and you’re bound to stumble across tons of selfies. For those unfamiliar with the modern terminology, selfies are photos snapped of oneself and are usually taken at arms length.
Self portraits were said to be the cause of some chaos at a Hong Kong marathon which took place earlier this year. Authorities have gone public, proposing a ban on smartphones for next year’s marathon.
The trouble started after runners completely stopped to take a photo of themselves. However, the people who were still moving behind the picture takers ran into them. Basically it was a massive pileup of athletes.
In the end, runners were crossing the finish line bloodied and bruised. A spokesman for one of the event’s sponsors spoke of selfies stating “It not only endangers themselves but endangers a lot of people running behind them. We want people to apply a little bit of common sense and discipline.”
Organizers behind the marathon have posted anti-selfie messages on social media sites as an alert that those type of photos should only be taken on the sidelines and definitely not on the track.
