Law enforcement authorities in Clay County are currently investigating what caused a police car to instantly burst into flames. While the official reason has yet to be determined, it’s suspected that freshly cut grass is the cause of the spontaneous combustion.

The troubling incident occurred on a Saturday during what should have been a routine traffic stop. The working deputy had parked off the side of the road, on grass that had been recently mowed.

All of a sudden, without warning, the vehicle exploded, bursting into flames. Amazingly, the deputy was inside the vehicle at the time, but he managed to survive, escaping the ordeal with only minor injuries. He was hospitalized for smoke inhalation.

An investigation into the matter was immediately launched. At this time, no harmful intent is suspected, but deputies believe the freshly cut grass beneath patrol car got far too hot.

The clippings probably touched the vehicle’s undercarriage, which is what could have and most likely did cause the sudden blaze.
