Finding their eastern neighbors to be far too liberal, five western counties in Maryland wish to secede from the state.

It’s their feeling that they are being subjected to diminished personal liberties and an oppressive government.

They call themselves the Western Maryland Initiative.

According to their spokesman, the general consensus among the group is that, “Annapolis could care less about the people in the five western counties. The only two things we can count on from Annapolis are: They will assault our rights and our wallets.

Given that, the Initiative has decided they’d be better off on their own.

The five counties involved – Carroll, Frederick, Allegany, Garret, and Washington – constitute 11 percent of the state’s population.

While they show economic diversity, the vast majority of the counties’ residents are white Republicans.

Other parts of the state, particularly the larger cities, tend to have greater ethnic variety and most often vote Democrat.

Even though the secessionists have already picked out a name for their new state, it’s unlikely it’ll ever happen.

Of the many that have tried, the last successful secession was West Virginia, 150 years ago.
