In the state of Iowa blind people are allowed to buy and carry guns in public with a legal permit granted from the government.

According to state law, a person cannot be denied a firearm permit because they are physically disabled, even if they can’t see.

Some law enforcement officials in Iowa disagree with the handling of the law, and won’t issue a permit to carry firearms to a blind person because of potential safety issues.

Delaware County Sheriff John LeClere said: “At what point do vision problems have a detrimental effect to fire a firearm? If you see nothing but a blurry mass in front of you, then I would say you probably shouldn't be shooting something.”

In order for someone to legally carry a gun in public in the state of Iowa, they have to pass an online course, but no shooting test or in person instruction is necessary.

In some states, gun owners must pass a vision and shooting test before they are given a permit to own the gun.

Disability advocates say that it would violate federal law to deny gun permits for blind people who qualify for them.
