ABOUT THE JAZZ GUITARISTS SIGNATURE SERIES: Each lesson checks out the improvisational style of an influential artist within the history of jazz guitar. This is done through a short transcribed phrase, most likely performed over a reoccurring harmonic cadence (eg. II-V-I).

ABOUT PAT MARTINO: Born Pat Azzara in South Philly, Martino began playing professionally in 1961 at age 15. Throughout his early career he worked as a sideman with saxophonists Willis Jackson and Eric Kloss, along with different organists including Jack McDuff, Jimmy Smith, Don Patterson and Richard "Grooves" Holmes. Martino made his recording debut as leader in 1967 with the album "El Hombre" on Prestige Records.
In 1980 Martino suffered an almost deadly brain aneurysm which resulted in the loss of his memory and playing abilities. With the assistance and encouragement of family and friends in combination with his old recordings, he was able to regain his intellectual capabilities and ultimately made a full recovery. He resumed his recording career in 1987 with the recording, "The Return" and has actually kept a hectic performing schedule ever since.
