Nelson Mandela’s autobiography comes to the big screen at TIFF

Some might say its two decades too late.

But Nelson Mandela's autobiographical tale has finally hit the big screen at the Toronto International Film Festival.

"Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom" was showcased on Saturday, with British actor Idris Elba - made famous for his role in HBO's "The Wire" - plays the iconic South African leader.

He said the role was always going to have massive challenges.

SOUNDBITE: Actor, Idris Elba, saying (English):

"Everything from the performance aspects, I don't look like Mr. Mandela, how do I capture this man to also just the weight of playing a living legend you know, that everybody can almost do some sort of impression of."

The film tells the story of Mandela's life - from his beginnings in a rural village through to his inauguration as the first democratically elected president of South Africa.
