STORY: Thousands of supporters of Islamist parties protested in Karachi, Pakistan, on Sunday (September 8) against a possible U.S. strike on Syria.
The protesters marched through the financial capital, carrying banners and chanting anti-U.S. slogans.
U.S. President Barack Obama has proposed limited strikes on Syria but faces an uphill fight in the U.S. Congress, which is due to meet Wednesday (September 11) to review authorization for the strike.
The Obama administration is also still trying to gather international support for military action, which Russia has so far opposed, resulting in no consensus among the United Nations Security Council.
Government sources have suggested that Pakistan, which is currently a non-permanent member of the U.N. Security Council and will have a crucial role in authorizing any punitive action against Syria, will oppose any resolution calling for authorization of military action against Syria
