Prison inmates usually can’t afford to be picky when it comes to food. But that’s not stopping one man in Connecticut who is putting his story out there, hoping jail authorities will give him a vegetarian meal.

Prison inmates usually can’t afford to be picky when it comes to food.

But that’s not stopping one man in Connecticut who is putting his story out there, hoping jail authorities will give him vegetarian meals.

Howard Cosby is upset because the state is giving him fish three times a week and justifying it by telling him that seafood is not meat.

The 35-year-old inmate was desperate so he decided to write a letter to the animal rights organization known as PETA. The group then sent a note to the prison warden asking the fish to be removed from Crosby’s meal plan, citing the federal Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act.

The law which was passed over a decade ago requires that jails do their best to avoid straining or putting burdens on prisoners’ religious practices. The situation is now under review by the Department of Correction's Religious Issue Review Committee.

An attorney for PETA is confident the right decision will be made. He stated “Clearly fish is meat. They have thoughts. They have interests. They have a central nervous system. They are not swimming vegetables.”
