Research out of the University of California San Diego has shown that people who suffer from insomnia have problems focusing on tasks during the day.

What they’re not sure of is if the insomnia is causing the daytime cognitive troubles, or if those troubles are a reason behind the insomnia.

Either way, their findings were a result of observing 50 people, half of whom said they had trouble sleeping and the others who classified themselves as sound sleepers.

All participants were given brain scans while they worked on memory tests.

The brains of the insomniacs didn’t respond like they’re supposed to – by shutting down the wandering thoughts capability and activating the part of the brain in charge of concentration.

Further, when the tests got harder, the sleepless weren’t nearly as successful at summoning the additional brain power needed to do them as the well-rested were.

From a quality standpoint, when the insomniacs did sleep they did so as soundly as the others.

A sleep researcher in the UK wondered about the nature of the connection saying, “maybe what is affecting their working memory and ability to focus on the task at hand is also causing insomnia."
